For hikers the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail is marked. From Gasquet travel on the Smith River Scenic Byway with camping, fishing, hiking, and floating; river access points are marked. Most of Klamath National Forest is west of Yreka and Weed. Travel Hwy 96 through the forest with opportunities for scenic driving, camping, picnicking, accessing the Klamath River, fishing, and paddling/floating. Southwest of Yreka on FR 93 are more campgrounds and numerous trailheads for hiking, horse riding, and usually mountain biking. Northeast of Weed is a section of the forest with scenic driving the byway to access lakes, campgrounds and trailheads. National Forest maps include topographic information(no contour lines), hiking trails, service roads, campgrounds, other recreation sites, points of interest, regulations, and contact information if you need permits or additional information before you head for the great outdoors. For information about motorized off-road travel (ATVs, motorcycles, 4WD's, etc.) contact the Klamath National Forest. Travel Hwy 199 east from Crescent City or Hwy 96 north from Hoopa to explore the north half of the forest with opportunities for camping, hiking, fishing at river accesses on the Klamath or Smith Rivers, scenic river views, or access forest roads leading into the forest to campgrounds and hiking trails. From Garberville travel east to the south half of Six Rivers NF; explore the forest roads leading to Ruth Lake. Lake activities include camping, picnicking, boating, fishing, and hiking. The Mad River Ranger District has several OHV trails available for jeeps, ATV's or dirt bikes. The California Road & Recreation Atlas now has 14 pages of all-new Landscape "Metro Maps" of the four largest urban areas of the state: Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and Sacramento. The enlarged scale (1" = 2.5 miles or 1:157,000) shows even more recreation detail than before. New features of the twenty-eight page Recreation Guide now include climate graphs, eight-classes of public lands ownership, shaded relief and point-to-point mileages. All the maps feature beautifully detailed, digitally rendered landscape relief. The maps are fully compatible with GPS technology. The scale for most of the state is 1:300,000 or 1"= 5 miles.
